Thanksgiving in London, Part 2

It has been a while since I posted Part 1, but I do want to finish these two articles so here goes.

While in London during Thanksgiving, one event that is definitely worth the time is to visit the various Christmas Markets, both in London and out of the metropolitan area. These Christmas Markets are full of small booths or chalets, populated by local crafters and small volume artisans who peddle their wares at …

The Four Horseshoes Inn, Thornham Magna, Suffolk, UK

We have friends who live near the lovely village of Stanton, in Suffolk, UK, and every time we travel to England we try to fit in a visit with them.  And when we do, we four make a point of dining at the Four Horseshoes Inn, located in Thornham Magna.  The food is fantastic, the atmosphere is positively pure English and we have never been disappointed.

The Four Horseshoes is a lovely Suffolk-pink building with …

More Fun with British Food Names

OK, so maybe Toad-In-The-Hole is not for you.  Or Bangers and Mash. But sausages are for breakfast, right?

Let’s take a look at breakfast, then. And maybe some other meals as well.

For a few years, both of us had a personal trainer who helped greatly in teaching us the most effective way to work out without injuring ourselves. She also shared this: “Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dine like a pauper.”  …

What the Heck is Toad in The Hole?

One of the fun things about the English language is how, over time, expressions that become popular seem to make no sense at all.  Some of the funniest relate to food and many come from the Brits; to call them strange is not a stretch!  Let’s translate them for you so when you see the items on the menu you’ll know exactly what they are.

First up, “Toad-in-the-Hole.” This one is easy, but let’s begin …

Up? Down? We Chose Up, and The Pub was great!

When we stayed at Updown Cottage in Shaftesbury, we were with dear friends who were on their first visit to England, so we wanted them to experience as much of the “real” England as possible. After picking them up at Heathrow and allowing for a bit of rest from the overnight flight, we loaded up the rental car and set out for Shaftesbury where we would be staying for a week. By the time we …

This Pub is Older Than the United States…but the food is fresh!

When we stayed at the Octon Lodge the first time, we asked the landlord where we could get dinner, having arrived fairly late in the day. He pointed out two pubs, each about the same distance. One of them was the Greyhound Inn, in Staple Fitzpaine. The pub was only 5 minutes from the Lodge, so we headed there. Being adventurous, Jake ordered the Lamb in Lavender sauce that was on the menu. While …

The George Restaurant & Bar, Molash, Kent

On one of our journeys in 2016, we wanted to spend some time in Kent, a county in the South East of England we had previously only visited briefly. Arriving at our rented cottage we asked the owner where we could get a good meal and she recommended The George, in Molash.  Having some sightseeing to do first we didn’t get to The George until the third day.  Being Americans who tend to eat dinner …

Marlborough Head Pub, Mayfair, London

We first ran into the Marlborough Head about ten years ago, although it’s been there for a very long time. When I say we “ran” into it, that is literally what we did. We had been walking down North Audley, just south of Oxford Street, near what used to be the American Embassy on Grosvenor Square.  A heavy rain shower started to pummel down, so we ran across the street and into the door. It …

What’s up with British pub food?

A few years ago the common thought was that British cuisine was bland and drab and, for some simple reasons, that was true, then. The UK suffered greatly during World War II, with rationing starting in September of 1939, and not ending until July 4, 1954. Rationing was briefly reintroduced in 1956-57 during the Suez crisis. Even after rationing ended, some foods remained scarce, particularly cheese, which remained so into the 1980s. As a result …
