The Four Horseshoes Inn, Thornham Magna, Suffolk, UK
We have friends who live near the lovely village of Stanton, in Suffolk, UK, and every time we travel to England we try to fit in a visit with them. And when we do, we four make a point of dining at the Four Horseshoes Inn, located in Thornham Magna. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere is positively pure English and we have never been disappointed.
The Four Horseshoes is a lovely Suffolk-pink building with a thatched roof that is quintessentially English. When entering, the doorway is quite low, as is befitting a building built in the 12thcentury and, in fact, it is thought to be the oldest Inn in Suffolk.
The beams inside are also low so even one of average height like Jake, has to occasionally duck their head under the beams. In consideration of possible injury, the innkeepers have added padding to the beams where needed and placed plenty of warnings about the height!
Normally we eat in the bar area, as it is pet-friendly, and our friends like to take their dog with them. She stays politely under the table, knowing that at the end of the meal there are likely to be “treats” for her. Our regular table near the bar is intimate, with good separation between the other tables, offering a warm, homey feel to the place. The bar is well-stocked with plenty of options, including Jake’s personal favorite, Green King.
The menu is variable through the year, depending on the availability of local produce, but the one constant item served that we love is fish and chips. The fish is fresh, tender and flaky, the batter is light and lovely, the chips are good, solid chunky pieces of potato. It’s one of the best, consistently good quality fish and chips places that we have found in our travels.
The Inn does have accommodations, but we cannot speak to that. We stay with our friends who live just 15 minutes away. However, the reviews of the inn on social media seem positive. They even offer a Bed and Breakfast option.
Parking is across the road, which is very convenient. Thornham Magna is a tiny hamlet in the vicinity of Eye, Suffolk. The inn is at one end of the hamlet and is very easy to get to from just about any nearby town. From Bury St. Edmunds, it’s about 30 minutes, and the same from Ipswich. Norwich is about 40 minutes north.
The Four Horseshoes. Go. Enjoy.
